Der Film zeigt das Leben eines jeden der drei Brüder, deren Laufbahnen sich mit der politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Geschichte Brasiliens im 20. Jahrhundert vermischten. Jeder trug auf seine Weise zu den wichtigsten Veränderungen bei, die Brasilien in dieser Zeit durchmachte.
Vor und nach dem Film Präsentation brasilianischer Musik mit Marcos de Souza, Pianist, und Matthias Haffner, Percussionist.
